There are several types of wood shelters that one can build for survival. All of us need to learn to build at least one or two of these models. Matt Redhawk, founder of My Patriot Supply points out that a good survival shelter should be able to last you for a few days, preferably a few weeks. He highlights the five things you need in order to construct a proper survival shelter. I. Build the Main Frame. To build the best frame start by factoring in a bed. The best bed has to be between 12-18 inches off the ground. This protects your body from losing heat to the cold earth. You also need a ridgepole that can support the weight of the lean-ons. Once you’ve factored out the ridgepole and the bed size, you will need to expand the cavity to create extra space and to secure the corners using a Jam knot. II. Build the Bed. Shuck beds are the best survival beds especially in the wild. They are simply mattresses made from dried corn shucks. The shucks can be arranged in a herringbone pattern, to make it soft, compact and stable while providing comfort and ease. III. The Dome Framework. The best dome for survival shelters should be a wigwam structure built using about 10 samplings that are 8 feet long and 1 foot wide in diameter. You start by tying up the top parts to the ridge and sticking the lower ends to the ground. The mid sections have to be stretched out and tied together to create a dome-shape around the entire structure. IV. The Cover. Because of their size and structure, most often survival shelters tend to have double the temperature of its surrounding. This carries with it the risk of heat stroke or suffocation. It is vital to shop for reflective materials that absorb less heat unless you need it to double up as camouflage. The best part about it is that most survival shelters tend to be simple structures that you can design out in the wilderness. Matt Redhawk of My Patriot Supply highlights the fact that you can opt for bunkers, reinforced rooms, concrete barriers and secret rooms as your means of survival. Unfortunately, most of these are not affordable to the average person.
